Cameron Edser and Michael Richards win Nescafe Big Break (4/11/2006):

Nescafe Big Break was a national competition, offering young people with a creative idea the chance to make it happen. In its final year, we made the top 6, and were awarded $15,000 to help establish GooRoo Animation.

It all started in early 2006 when we decided to put in an application. A few months later we were shortlisted from thousands of entries into the top 400. Then we sent them our films and everything else we could think of to try impress the judges. It must have worked because before too long we got the call saying we'd made the top 15.

The 15 finalists were invited to Sydney to give a presentation. Michael made the trip on his own and worked his magic in front of a panel of judges, demonstrating just why we deserved to be selected in the top 6.

The overall winner was determined by public voting on the Internet, so we launched a huge campaign, getting everyone we knew to vote daily. Despite our best attempts, we fell just short to surf photographer Stuart Gibson.

The competition was an amazing experience, and really was the launch of our company. It was huge in terms of publicity, and gave us the financial start we needed to get GooRoo Animation up and running. We have put some of the funds towards the equipment we need to produce professional quality stop-motion animation and some towards the production of Animal Instincts, which hopefully demonstrates that we were a worthy recipient of the award.
